9 min. HD, color, digital video, 2009.
A nine-minute single shot of an ordinary occurrence, that of a child performing household chores—folding laundry and making the bed. By yoking itself to its subject in a visual dance, the handheld video calls our attention to the physicality of the videographer, whose relationship to the subject, a Nepali boy, is unclear. The “exotic” is conjugated with the mundane in the duration of the shot, which exhausts expectations for further character or narrative development. Installed from December 1–31, 2009 for Ethnographic Terminalia at The Ice Box in the Crane Arts Center in Philadelphia, PA.
Recorded, produced, edited, translated, and all subtitles by Stephanie Spray.
